In recent months, LiveGreat Foundation has hosted a series of transformative consortiums, empowering the youth and grassroots leaders of Kibra with critical tools to tackle climate change adaptation and leadership.
Using the GCA toolkit ,these sessions have sparked one undeniable truth: real change must start at the grassroots.—but they also beg a larger question,
What does true leadership for sustainable development look like?
Young leaders debated issues from climate resilience to economic opportunities for informal settlements. It was clear: the solutions for Kibra must come from within—but with the right partnerships and leadership to amplify our voices.
When community leaders come together to share knowledge, they create practical, locally grounded solutions that can be quickly replicated. Peer-to-peer learning youth groups and informal waste workers—enables faster uptake of adaptive practices like biodiversity restoration, vertical gardening, composting, or upcycling.
Trust grows more easily within communities, making collaboration a natural and effective pathway for behavior change. At the same time, these alliances help bridge resource gaps, as communities pool tools, labor, and indigenous wisdom to amplify their impact. Grassroots collaboration not only sparks innovation but also empowers communities to raise a stronger, united voice in influencing local climate planning and adaptation budgets.
In essence, adaptation becomes faster, more inclusive, and more sustainable when it is co-created by the people living at the frontline of climate change.
If we are serious about accelerating climate adaptation, then we must elevate grassroots leadership—not as beneficiaries, but as co-creators of solutions. Governments, development partners, and institutions must create space at the table for community leaders, youth champions, and local innovators. Their lived experience is not just valid—it’s vital.
What do you think? Is this the kind of leadership Africa needs to thrive from Kibra to Cape Town?
Let’s keep the conversation going. 💬👇
